Authors

You've written the next great American (or European, or African, or Asian -- it doesn't matter) novel. However, you can't get an agent or editor to look at it. You're thinking of self-publishing or submitting it to one of those free web sites that feature a mixed bag of hundreds of unpublished works.

Try ChapterByChapter. We only post finished novels that promise to be appealing to readers and have a chance at getting published if only some publisher will give them a chance. The first bit of your novel will be available on the web site for anyone to read for free. We divide a book up into no more than ten sections. If readers like the first one, they can buy more at 99 cents each. You get a 33% royalty on any portion sold. We hope that your book gets plenty of attention, which might catch the eye of a traditional publisher.

We are receptive to inquiries for any genre except children's books, unredeeming pornography, or gratuitous violence. No non-fiction. If you have a collection of short stories, tell us about it. We'll see if it will fit within our format.

Books that appear on this web site are strong in the traditional story-telling traits of engaging characters, gripping plot, dramatic conflict, snappy dialog, and an addictive story arc.

We will consider your novel if it is:

• Finished.
• Written in English.
• Proof-read
• Edited by a professional editor or someone with similarly recognizable literary credentials.
• A good read that our board of readers (1) finished and (2) liked.
• Copyright registered to you alone with the U.S. Library of Congress or the certifying authority of your country.
• Submitted in Microsoft Word or Open Office format.

If you want to give us a try, tell us about your novel at the bottom of this page. If we think it fits, we will ask to see it. Our board of readers will vote on it.

If we choose to post your novel, you must then provide:

• A log line to appear with your novel's entry in the index to our site.
• Jacket text, exactly as you might see in a hardbound book in a bookstore. Otherwise known as a pitch.
• Jacket art. This is highly recommended, as the Internet is a visual medium. In addition, art for each chapter is a nice feature, but not required. If you don't know any artists, we have a page for artists who are willing to work with our authors.
